Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences

Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences had a group of students who still needed to pass the Living Environment Regents but were no longer scheduled for the corresponding biology course. Without dedicated time in their regular schedules to revisit the material, these repeat test-takers needed a consistent way to continue preparing for the June exam.

School leadership sought daytime support that could meet students where they were academically, reinforce essential biology content, and give them focused opportunities to address the gaps reflected in their previous Regents scores.

During the spring 2026 semester, Toolkit Tutors placed Miguel Nazario at the school to provide targeted pull-out instruction during the school day. Miguel worked with repeat test-takers outside their regular classes, giving them dedicated time to review Living Environment content and prepare for the June Regents exam.

The school established a consistent workspace and a clear system for storing and accessing instructional materials. Within that structure, Miguel focused tutoring on the concepts and exam demands students most needed to strengthen, helping them reconnect with material they were no longer studying in a scheduled course.

Among the Living Environment retakers who received tutoring in spring 2026, scores increased by an average of 15.8 points from baseline. One student made especially substantial progress, increasing her score by 52 points following her tutoring program with Miguel.

The results demonstrate the value of creating dedicated instructional time for repeat test-takers whose regular schedules no longer include the course they need to revisit. Dr. Ahmed also observed broader improvement among the school's retakers in June, reinforcing the importance of sustained support for this student population.
