Case Study
Epic High School South
In spring 2026, Toolkit Tutors partnered with Epic High School South to provide targeted daytime ELA Regents support for 11th- and 12th-grade students with substantial performance gaps. Working in pull-out groups of four or fewer, Manav provided individualized instruction based on each student's prior exam performance and baseline assessments. Among the eight students with baseline and post-program exam scores, the average increase was 32 points.

The Challenge
After reviewing his school's January Regents data, John Geyer, Epic High School South's AP of Instruction, had identified a subset of juniors and seniors with significant performance gaps in ELA. To date, the school's existing after-school and Saturday tutoring initiatives had not been providing enough support to prepare these students for the June Regents exam.
Having previously used Toolkit Tutors to achieve substantial performance gains in ELA, school leadership requested an experienced ELA tutor to provide pull-out instruction during the school day, giving students consistent access to focused ELA Regents preparation without relying solely on programming outside regular school hours.
The Approach
During the spring 2026 semester, Toolkit Tutors placed Manav, an experienced high school ELA tutor, with a small roster of students who needed the most support. Tutoring took place during the school day in pull-out groups of four students or fewer.
Manav spent the first several days reviewing student data with the Assistant Principal of Instruction and ELA faculty. He used students' prior Regents exam performance and baseline assessments to identify individual needs and tailor instruction accordingly.
This combination of close faculty coordination, small groups, and student-specific planning allowed tutoring time to remain focused on the skills and content each student most needed to strengthen.
- Spring 2026 semester
- 11th- and 12th-grade students
- ELA Regents support
- Daytime pull-out tutoring
- Groups of four or fewer
- Prior exam + baseline data review
- Individualized instructional plans
The Outcome
Of the eight students tutored by Manav who had both baseline and post-program exam scores, the average increase was 32 points. The result reflects substantial progress among students selected for support because of significant gaps in ELA performance.
The spring program also extended a partnership that began in summer 2024. School leadership credited Toolkit Tutors with adapting to the school's needs, collaborating closely with faculty, and providing tutors who build authentic relationships with students.
